Stuart Brown, who's original training was in Mechanical Engineering, obtained a PhD in the application of robotics to orthopaedic surgery from the University of Dundee in 2000. Since then he has worked with Professor Sir Alfred Cuschieri's 'Surgical Technology Group' as a research engineer and latterly as Group Leader. The Group is one of the core research groupings which make up the Institute for Medical Science and Technology (IMSaT ), a research institute located close to Ninewells teaching hospital in Dundee.
Stuart's research interests relate to the development of systems for surgery, both from engineering and ergonomic aspects. Much of his work is pursued in collaboration with industry and he is a named inventor on a range of patents.
Stuart holds other grants from the MRC DPFS and Scottish Enterprise, related to the development of components and devices to aid surgical procedures.
Stuart is a Chartered Member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and when he's not at IMSaT
he may often be found aboard his small sailing boat on Scotland's Firth of Forth.
